Pelvic Health Treatment at Synergy.

From day 1, you will receive a thorough evaluation where you will have a private, one-on-one conversation with a registered physiotherapist trained in pelvic health care who will then evaluate all aspects of your condition. Your symptoms are evaluated and so is your medical history. External and Internal physical examinations are also a part of the assessment. Since every patient is unique, expect that your pelvic health treatment will be personalized according to your specific condition. Treatments may include:
  • Manual therapy. Manual therapy uses hands on techniques to treat pelvic floor dysfunction. These techniques may include soft tissue massage, stretching, myofascial and trigger point release and mobilization of the affected tissues.
  • Pelvic Exercise. Pelvic health exercises focus on restoring pelvic floor health through stretches, postures, breathing and strengthening techniques. The muscles of the pelvis, lower limbs and thorax are also included to improve and the whole system. These exercises do not only help general posture but also heightened levels of mood and energy.
  • Patient Education. Pelvic health education focuses on restoring pelvic health to improve symptoms through lifestyle and diet changes and posture education. Learning about your body is a large part in restoring tis natural function.

About Nicole Maunu, MPT BSc., Your Pelvic Health Physiotherapist

You’re in good hands at Synergy Health.

Nicole, your pelvic health physiotherapist, offers specialized post graduate training in the area of Pelvic Health Rehabilitation. She is certified and passionate about treating a variety of pelvic disorders you may be experience including; pelvic pain, incontinence, prolapse and dyspaerunia. As a Kinesiologist and Registered Physiotherapist she is trained in movement analysis and the biomechanics of the human body. She works with you to assess, treat and implement prevention for various types of movement and pain dysfunctions you may be feeling. Her treatment approach incorporates a balance of manual therapy, IMS treatment, specific exercise-based programs and client education with the goal of decreasing pain and optimizing function. She has a specific interest in core and pelvic stabilization and has done research in this area. Nicole has a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Victoria and a Masters of Physical Therapy from the University of British Columbia. She has been educated as a certified strength trainer and fitness leader through BCRPA. She has also undergone postgrad education and training in Advanced Orthopedic Manual Therapy through the Physiotherapy Association’s Orthopedic Division. Nicole holds a certificate in intermuscular stimulation (IMS) which she recived through the UBC Gunn IMS Program.

About Your Pelvic Floor

Your pelvic floor controls the release of bowel movements and urine flow. It is made up of muscles and fascia in the pelvis that support and give inner strength. When something is wrong with the pelvic floor, symptoms such as pain, discomfort and incontinence occur. Pelvic pain can affect both men and women. If you have any of these symptoms, you are encouraged to seek help from a health professional.

You should seek help when you feel any of these symptoms;
  • Strong urgency to urinate followed by uncontrollable urination,
  • Involuntary loss of urine during coughing, laughing or other physical activities,
  • Pain during and /or after intercourse,
  • Heaviness around the pelvic region, and/or;
  • Any chronic pelvic pain present for more than three months.
