ims

Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) is a technique used by our physiotherapists at Synergy Health Centre that can help reduce pain and discomfort in patients. Our Physiotherapists agree that the most important thing you can do to reduce common chronic pain or pain after injury or surgery is through physical movement. But sometimes the pain of the physical activity is too much for patients to work through without some help. IMS can be that help.

How IMS Works

Another term for IMS is dry needling. If that sounds a bit scary, you’ll understand why intramuscular stimulation is that preferred term. But IMS does involve needles, just not the type of big, hollow needle used for giving injections. Instead, IMS uses very fine needles that are used to stimulate points on the body that have been shown to reduce the tension and pain suffered by our physiotherapy patients. Because this technique has been so successful, it has become a regular practice of our physiotherapy practitioners.

Getting the Results You Want

If you’re suffering from pain, the most important thing will be to reduce that pain. Physiotherapy may be the ideal modality for reducing pain, but it also means doing a lot of work. You’ll have to change the way you use your body and take on exercises which can hurt. If you want to reduce the pain during those first, most difficult sessions, you can ask for intramuscular stimulation. IMS can help you to get started, which can often be the hardest part of your treatment.

The good news is that once you start working toward a healthier and stronger body, the exercises will get easier and you’ll be playing an active role in reducing the pain you feel. You’ll be relieved to find that intramuscular stimulation isn’t something you’ll need forever, especially if you work with one of our excellent physiotherapist.
